In concurrent with the European Council’s decision to grant EU candidate status to Georgia, TREASURIUM has
decided to celebrate this long-awaited achievement with a project to honor Georgia’s important contribution to
the world. Georgia has gifted the world “Wine”, a crucial element of celebrations since antiquity, and now our
nation acknowledges this contribution as we journey towards Europe. Throughout history, nations frequently
commemorate their achievements on coins and currencies. Thus, we too intend to highlight Georgia’s
significant contribution during this pivotal moment in our nation’s history. To accomplish this, TREASURIUM has
developed a project involving European partners.

ENGRAVING AND THE SYMBOLIC ELEMENTS
Alaverdi monastery is a prime example of the ongoing connection between the
Georgian Church and the Georgian viniculture. Originally founded in the 6th century,
this magnificent monastery is surrounded by vineyards and still produces wine in its
infamous centuries’ old cellar by monks who dedicatedly are keeping this tradition alive.
Alaverdi is one of the most impressive cultural monuments in all of Georgia and an
important center of Georgian culture and scholarship.
The story of Georgian wine is marked by 8000 years of uninterrupted tradition of
viticulture and winemaking. In 2017, an international team of archaeologists discovered
evidence of winemaking in a Neolithic settlement not too far from Tbilisi, the capital of
Georgia that trembled the world and put Georgia on every major news channel of the
world as the “Cradle of wine” or “Motherland of wine”.
Thus, our 8000 denomination was also justified based on these evidences
Thou Art a Vineyard is a medieval Georgian hymn created to praise
Mary the mother of Christ and the vineyard that made the heavenly
spiritual wine (Christ) poured out to God. This divine chant is often
hummed in Georgian feasts and has close ties with its wine culture.
This text was meticulously selected by our director Mr. Ajami, for its
magical symbolism; being made by three words representing “Trinity”
and twelve letters, referring to the twelve disciples of Christ.
Georgian Calligrapher David Maisuradze was commissioned to
calligraph the phrase in Georgian script incorporating a shape of
Qvevri in his work. The author of this hymn is King Demetrius I of
Georgia (1093–1156) and the hymn is dedicated to Georgia and the
patronage of the Virgin Mary.
Qvevri is Georgia’s most important and best-known winemaking vessel, and it
remains the centerpiece of traditional winemaking in Georgia. In 2013,
UNESCO added Qvevri and “The ancient Georgian tradition of Qvevri
winemaking” to its list of worlds intangible cultural heritage.
The Qvevri is a large egg-shaped clay vessel with narrow bottom and a wide
mouth at the top, used for wine fermentation, maturation, and storage, that is
either buried below ground or set into the floors of large wine cellars. The
Qvevries are sealed inside with hot beeswax and its lid.
David Gareji is a distinguished sacred site and a prominent monument of
cultural heritage for Georgia that has never lost its importance. It still is a
functioning monastery and an architectural masterpiece. The complex was
founded in the 6th century and it remained an important center of religious
and cultural activity for many centuries in Georgia. It is also the place chosen
by the King Demetre I, the eldest son of King David the Builder and the author
of the famous Georgian hymn “Thou Art a Vineyard”, as a place of
confinement after he abdicated the throne for a monastic life, in the 12
Century AD.
Borjgali is considered to be one of the oldest and main
symbols of Georgian culture dating back to pre-Christian
period. It is the symbol of eternity and is in the shape of
the Sun with seven rotating wings. It is commonly
presented as the primary symbol of Georgia and is used in
Georgian IDs and passports, national currencies, as the
logo of Georgian Rugby Union as well as Georgian Airways.
